It's a year later and due to the very hot summer and the rather over invasive nature of some of the pond plants I put in things have got a little wild. The duck week is now a worse problem than the azolla because at least the azolla was easy to clear out. Next year we will finally be getting around to installing the pump as the best way to keep down duck weed is with a fountain. On the wildlife front we have lots of invertibrate life in the pond and the frogs love it (see photo below) but the birds aren't able to use it to bathe in anymore because of the duckweed. Come back in about March when I intend to do a major thin down of the plants.
